The 30-year-old is one of three Italian players, alongside Leonardo Ghiraldini and Michele Rizzo, to have swapped Benetton Treviso for the English side over the summer.
The 37-times capped No.8, who played a part in the Azzurri's RBS 6 Nations campaign in the spring, took advice from fellow Italian Martin Castrogiovanni before making the move.
And with the new league season just under a month away, Barbieri is in no doubt he made the right decision.
"I'm really excited. This is a big step for me. This is what my goal has always been, to come to a Premiership team, a top club," he told the Leicester Mercury.
"This is what every kid hopes to do and maybe win something here too.
"We have played against Leicester many times. I know they're a strong team. I know Castro and most of the guys
who I have played against in the England team in Test matches.
"When the move came about, Castro told me how the club was run and just how professional it was - and it just made my eyes light up."
