Ireland's Coghlan eyes top-two finish

Ireland captain Fiona Coghlan believes Saturday's clash with England represents the perfect chance for her side to assert their top-two credentials in the 2013 RBS 6 Nations.
Coghlan’s side have never finished above third in the competition but their late victory in Wales last weekend thanks to Gillian Bourke’s try, coupled with France’s shock defeat to Italy, has opened the door.

Ireland do however face an England side without a number of their senior players, who are currently concentrating on Sevens, but fresh from a 76-0 victory over Scotland.

And while Coghlan revealed claiming the scalp of England, or France who visit later in the competition, is high on her list of priorities, she’s expecting no easy ride from the seven-time defending champions.

“Having England and France at home it would be brilliant to turn one of them over,” she said.

“I haven’t really looked at it but there’s no English B side, it’s girls waiting in the wings to be given their opportunity and I’ve no doubt that they’ll all be looking to cement a spot for the World Cup next year.

“I would not like to see us slip from third, we want to aim higher than that.

“The primary thing is the World Cup qualification but going into it you just have to focus on every game.

“But after ten years going I’d love a bit of silverware but we have to be realistic about where we are, we have never finished above third.”
