Italy Women were not able to follow in the footsteps of their male counterparts and secure a historic RBS 6 Nations win over France, but they pushed Les Bleues all the way in a 28-20 defeat in Benevento.
The Italians came into the game on the back of a hard-fought 12-8 win over Wales but were on the back foot from the second minute as full-back Caroline Ladagnous put France in front with an early try.
Veronica Schiavon got a penalty back for the hosts but things looked ominous when Claire Canal scored France's second try midway through the first half for a 12-3 lead.
Italian captain Paola Zangirolami then grabbed a try to get her side back into the game but Elodie Poublan scored the third French try to give the visitors a 19-10 half-time lead.
Schiavone and Sandrine Agricole exchanged penalties at the start of the second half before lock Flavia Severin drew Italy back to within two points with a second Italian try.
But two penalties from Nadege Casenave proved enough for Nathalie Janvier's side who are still in with a chance of championship victory going into their final encounter with Wales in Bourgoin on Saturday.
