Leigh Halfpenny, named man of the match, kept the scoreboard ticking over, notching 14 points as Wales' dominance at the scrum proved pivotal.

And Davies is adamant that it was the forwards who provided the platform for Wales to follow up their win in Paris last time out with another victory over the Azzurri.

"It was a good performance especially up front," he said. "The boys were fantastic and worked really hard.

"We just had to make sure in the backline we kept the errors down and put our forwards in the right places. To be fair the pack were outstanding."

It was also a second win for Wales interim head coach Rob Howley, as the Red Dragons took to the torrential conditions better than their Italian counterparts.

And Howley believes that his side’s patience proved pivotal.

"The second half was all about composure and patience. We were clinical and took our opportunities," said Howley.

"There weren't always going to be opportunities in a game like that and probably the conditions suited Italy.

"But to come away winning 26-9 is something which I would have taken at the beginning of the game.

"The deluge that came in the first half as well [meant] the ball was very greasy and it was difficult under foot."
