Hat-trick hero believes Ireland confidence was key

Ireland Women's hat-trick hero Alison Miller believes her side have signalled their RBS 6 Nations intent with the way they inflicted defeat on seven-time defending champions England.
Miller scored a hat-trick to add to ten points from full-back Niamh Briggs as Ireland chalked up a first ever win over England – and in some style, prevailing 25-0.

Ireland now top the table and are one of just two sides, along with Italy, with two wins from their opening two matches, ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Scotland.

It took Ireland a major step closer towards qualification for the World Cup and Miller was delighted with the manner in which they secured their historic win.

“It was a great team performance and we really played well, I just finished off what the other girls had done, it was amazing,” said winger Miller.

“To win with such a margin and not let them score is a massive achievement, we knew we could win and we took that confidence and then we brought it home in front of some great support.

“It was a great team effort from all involved, everyone put so much effort in.”

Meanwhile, Ireland captain Fiona Coghlan revealed that her side knew they had to raise their game, having had to rely on a late Gillian Bourke try to defeat Wales in their opening match.

She added: “I would have taken a one point win but that was unbelievable, we raised it up a new level.

“It’s never hard to get up for an English game but to stay at that intensity for 80 minutes was fantastic, that has been our problem in recent years.

“After the week before [against Wales] we were a bit disappointed with how we played but we put that right.”
