Ross has played 25 times for his country, including ten RBS 6 Nations clashes, but won his last cap way back in 2006.

While in international exile Ross has thrown himself into life with London Welsh, making his 100th appearance in their LV= Cup defeat against Harlequins.

At 34 to some Ross’ international days should be well and truly behind him – not so his club boss Jones.

Duncan Weir, 21, and Ruaridh Jackson, 24, look set to go head-to-head for the jersey when Scotland’s RBS 6 Nations campaign kicks off against England at Twickenham on February 2 but Jones said: “He’s outstanding. Not just his contribution to London Welsh but Saracens as well.

“Anybody who can put 100th appearances together in the contemporary game proves his worth. I’m delighted for him. It’s a milestone he’s proud of and he’s still disappointed he hasn’t been recalled to the Scottish squad. It’s not just the figure (of 100 appearances) it’s the way he holds himself as a model professional and it’s a nice day for him and he’s delighted.”

Jones was also able to shed some light on Gavin Henson’s outside chance of a Six Nations call-up.

With first-choice fly-half Rhys Priestland out of the entire campaign and Wales caretaker coach Rob Howley having just two No. 10s to call on in James Hook and Dan Biggar, Henson could seemingly force his way into contention with a rapid return from injury.

Henson was due to be fit for the clash with Quins and Jones added: “Three weeks ago I said he was definitely going to be available against Quins, so I’ll say now that next week he’s definitely going to be available.”
