Warburton in the dark over captaincy

Sam Warburton admits he is uncertain whether he will captain Wales in the autumn internationals.
Appointed skipper by Warren Gatland in August 2011, the 24-year-old led Wales to a 2012 RBS 6 Nations Grand Slam last season and took charge on the summer tour of Australia where they lost the Test series 3-0.

The Cardiff Blues flanker also led Wales out when they came within a point of forcing extra time in their World Cup semi-final against France, though received a 17th-minute red card for a challenge on Vincent Clerc.

Wales welcome Argentina, Samoa and New Zealand to the Millennium Stadium in November with Australia making the trip on December 1.

And though he has been a mainstay in Gatland’s starting line-up, his place is under threat by the Ospreys’ emerging openside flanker Justin Tipuric, and Warburton says he is taking nothing for granted.

“I don't even know if I am still captain of Wales,” said Warburton.

“You don't know until each campaign comes around – nothing is set in stone nowadays.

“The competition around the Wales squad at the moment is immense and you have to make sure you are on top of your game.

“I am on my toes and trying to play the best I can and make sure I stay injury free.

“You never know when that [losing the captaincy] could happen, but if it did happen I am sure it would be for the right reasons.”
