Eli Walker will be one of Wales young stars hoping to make their mark in Italy
Wales Under-20 boss Webster has future stars in his eyes

New Wales Under-20s coach Richard Webster is adamant his young charges will be ready for the Junior World Championships despite only taking the reins this week.
Webster, who was part of the junior Welsh coaching team during the RBS 6 Nations, took over from Darren Edwards after the former London Irish scrum-half was confirmed as permanent head coach of Newport Gwent Dragons.

And having named his 26-man squad for the World Championships in Italy in June, the former British and Irish Lion is confident the side’s expansive style will serve them well in a tough pool against New Zealand, Argentina and the host side.

“I’ve been working with Darren since before the Six Nations started, so I don’t feel like I’m going to be at a disadvantage by coming in when I have,” said Webster who won 13 caps in the Welsh back row in the early nineties.

“It isn’t a case of me taking over his team, we built the team together so I know the players well and there won’t be any need for big changes.

“We played some really good rugby during the Six Nations, and I think we can improve on that in Italy.

“I was delighted with the style we played, and even though we lost to England and France, I think the players coming through will have the skills needed.

“I think it’s important at this level not to worry too much about size, that will come later.

“Whatever happens in Italy, I want to make sure our players play as many matches as possible next season.

“There is still a problem after the Under-20s age group players don’t get enough chances in the Magners League.

“I think it may be to do with the pressure on the regions to produce a European Cup winner, so perhaps if one of them manages to win it next year, these players might get more of a chance.”

Webster will be looking to improve on last year’s seventh place in Argentina, but he is well aware of the challenge posed by reigning champions New Zealand.

But having an extended preparation period before setting off to Italy is a luxury that Webster is eager to take advantage of.

“New Zealand are always very good at this level, but we’ll go into each game looking for a win,” added Webster.

“Argentina are the real unknown quantity so that game could end up being the key one for us. We just don’t know how good they are going to be.

“We really had very little preparation time before the Six Nations so it was amazing that we were able to push England as hard as we did given the number of training camps they had before the tournament.

“Before we go to Italy I’m going to get a lot more contact with the players so we should be a lot more prepared.”
