Last year the side failed to pick up a win in any of their four Autumn internationals, while their last win against any southern hemisphere side came back in October 2011 with in a 66-0 victory over Fiji.
But looking to change that stat, Howley wants his players to be on top form for when South Africa come to town in the first of the matches on November 9.
“It is a huge autumn fixture list and this will be an interesting month,” Howley told Wales Online.
“If you look back at the landscape of Welsh rugby over the last four or five years we have not been successful at this period in the calendar.
“Everyone says the next step is for Wales to beat a southern hemisphere side under Warren Gatland.
“We are playing the in-form team in world rugby first on November 9. I have been so impressed by them this season and they are getting back to the physicality as they had under Nick Mallett, who led them to a world record equalling 17 consecutive Test victories in 1997 and 1998.
“When our players come into us a couple of weeks before, the challenge for us is to get those guys up to those levels of physicality which we will be exposed to in this game against South Africa.”
