Sean Maitland admits Scotland's win over Ireland was one to remember

Maitland adamant Scotland are just getting started

Wing Sean Maitland is adamant Scotland can challenge for top honours in the RBS 6 Nations for years to come as they do so for the first time in eight Championships this year.

Scotland claimed their second victory of this year’s RBS 6 Nations on Sunday, defeating Ireland 12-8 to move level with Wales on four points in the table after three games.

Having lost 38-18 to England in their first fixture, Scotland bounced back to winning ways by seeing off Italy 34-10 in the first of three successive games at Murrayfield.

The win over Ireland was their first in the competition on home soil since 2001 and also marked the first time in seven years that they have won more than one game.

The last time Scotland won two or more matches was during the 2006 RBS 6 Nations where they ended third overall with a record of three victories and two losses.

And, with another fixture at Murrayfield to come against Wales on March 9 before a trip to France, New Zealand-born wing Maitland believes Scotland are on to something.

“When you get a win like that, especially talking to the older boys who have played Ireland in the past and know it’s hard to get a win against such a quality side, it makes it one to savour,” he said.

“I didn’t get too many opportunities out there. When I got the ball in hand, or in defence, I just tried to do my best with kick, chase and try to disrupt them.

“It was one of those games where you don’t get to see the ball, but our defence was absolutely outstanding.

“It’s a pretty great feeling. This is just the start for our team.”
