Optimism was high after that win over France that Italy could mount a challenge in this RBS 6 Nations but back-to-back defeats have effectively put paid to that.

But Martin Castrogiovanni, who captained Italy against Wales in the absence of Parisse, insists his side must regroup and come again in their remaining matches against England next Sunday, and Ireland.

“We have to stand up and start to work hard, because our Six Nations does not end here,” he said.

“We have to work hard, starting with our mental approach. Life is made of ups and downs, and we want to get up give our best to finish this tournament.

“We have the ability, as we have previously demonstrated.”
