His stellar start to the campaign – added to an impressive season domestically – has made Hogg into a contender for a place on the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia this summer.

But it could all have been very different until a dangerous tackle by the younger Hogg against South Africa in the opening game of the Junior  World Championship in Italy made him reassess the way his career was going.

As well as ten minutes in the sin bin, Hogg earned himself a two-match ban and some words of wisdom from father and former Hawick rugby player John.

“I learned a lot from that game and I thought that I really needed to concentrate on rugby now,” Hogg told the Scotsman.

“I got a telling off from a couple of people, my dad included so, yeah, I learned a lot in that tournament. That changed my perspective towards rugby.”
