Ryan Jones will captain Wales against Samoa
Warburton dropped for Samoa clash
14 November 2012, 3:10 pm
By David Jordan
Interim Wales boss Rob Howley is looking to Ryan Jones and Mike Phillips to turn around his side's fortunes against Samoa on Friday after dropping captain Sam Warburton.

Openside flanker Warburton has paid the price for Wales’ 12-26 defeat to Argentina last weekend and is replaced by Justin Tipuric in the back row, with former skipper Jones taking on the captaincy.

One experienced head returning is scrum-half Phillips who starts in place of Tavis Knoyle, while Ashley Beck replaces Scott Williams in the midfield alongside Jamie Roberts, who has recovered from “mild concussion” against the Pumas.

Howley has made eight changes in all with lock Bradley Davies, prop Paul James and hooker Richard Hibbard all starting.

After taking the armband Jones have captained Wales more than any other player but Howley admits the skipper will need support from elsewhere in the absence of Warburton.

“With a short six day turnaround it was important for us to freshen things up and also make use of the competition for places we have within this squad, something which has been a key ingredient for the success of the squad over the last 18 months,” added Howley.

“In making changes we also needed to bring in some genuine experience.

“It is important to have leaders throughout the team and we are hoping the likes of Mike Phillips, who made a positive impact last week, can bring his experience to the side.”

“Ryan reaches an impressive personal milestone, it will be a huge honour for him but in the context of what happened last week his and the team's priorities are about producing a performance.”

Wales: Leigh Halfpenny; Alex Cuthbert, Ashley Beck, Jamie Roberts, George North; Dan Biggar, Mike Phillips; Paul James, Richard Hibbard, Aaron Jarvis, Bradley Davies, Ian Evans, Ryan Jones (Capt), Justin Tipuric, Toby Faletau

Replacements: Ken Owens, Gethin Jenkins, Scott Andrews, Luke Charteris, Sam Warburton, Tavis Knoyle, Rhys Priestland, Scott Williams
