Thompson eyeing Paterson's international place

Edinburgh's Jim Thompson has put his hand up to fill the breach at full-back for the remainder of Scotland's RBS 6 Nations campaign after signing a new two year contract with the club.
Scotland’s record points scorer Chris Paterson was ruled out for the rest of the Championship after being injured in the defeat to Wales with the versatile Hugo Southwell coming in for the 16-12 loss to Italy.

Specialist full-back Thompson, grandson of the late commentator Bill McLaren, has already impressed head coach Andy Robinson with his performances in the IRB Nations Cup but injuries have hampered his progress this campaign.

But with a run of games under his belt for the Gunners, Thompson is confident he can step into teammate Paterson’s shoes if called upon by Robinson.

He said: “What happened to Paterson in Wales was terrible.

“Now I realise that I have to step up in order to get involved and when I am selected I need to do as well as I can in order to keep my place.

“My main position is full-back and that is where I want to play. But the occasions when I have played on the wing have been enjoyable.”

Meanwhile Glasgow scrum-half Mark McMillan is making the move south to Premiership side Bath after finding first-team opportunities limited since the arrival of Chris Cusiter last summer.

He said: “I have been watching Bath this season and they are playing an exciting brand of rugby with a great squad of players.

“I am really looking forward to becoming part of such a great club with a rich history and a bright future.”
