All of which meant that Philippe Saint-Andre overlooked the 68-cap man for his RBS 6 Nations squad.
But having signed a new contract with Toulon, Michalak has not given up hope of appearing at a third World Cup for Les Bleus next autumn.
"I don't have many seasons left but I can easily see myself finishing my career at Toulon," said Michalak, whose last appearance for France came in the 2013 autumn international defeat to South Africa.
"I have as a goal to go to the World Cup next year, that's a great challenge to have. And in order to achieve that I have to do everything I can, no matter what position.
"It has been frustrating (this season) but you can't do much about injuries. I have taken my time to come back and now I want to have fun and enjoy myself out on the pitch."
