Yet the 33-year-old will be on the bench this weekend with Rhodri Jones, the 22-year-old Scarlets prop handed his chance.
Rhodri Jones started three autumn Tests while Adam Jones was sidelined with an ankle injury and has been buoyed by the support he has received from his experienced team-mate.
"It is a massive opportunity for me and hopefully I can show what I can do," he told WalesOnline.
"There is a lot more pressure starting because you are there from the beginning and it's a lot more challenging.
"I am grateful for the chance and hopefully it shows I've been doing well when coming off the bench.
"Adam came up straight away to congratulate me and showed he was keen to help. That was a very nice gesture.
"I would not say I am replacing Adam because he still has the opportunity coming off the bench and I am sure he will want to do his best to get back in the starting side.
"I just have to do my best to keep him out. I have seen him as an icon over the years and every young Welsh prop looks up to Adam.
"He is a great scrummager and around the field. He has been around for a long time and I am sure he will be around for a while yet.
"I just have to do my best after being given the chance."
