But not only did the Italians suffer a 46-7 loss but Castrogiovanni was also forced off the pitch after just seven minutes with a rib injury.
But while sitting out training until Thursday, the 32-year-old Toulon player has not been yet been ruled out completely for the Italian's game against England at the Stadio Olimpico this Saturday.
"The instrumental tests in which Martin has undergone both immediately after the match against Ireland in Rome this morning showed no fractures," explained press manager Luigi Troiani and chief medic Vincenzo Leracitano.
"But the area remains very sore and we can make new insights in the coming days when the swelling on the affected area will have been absorbed and X-ray images will be clearer.
"On Thursday, we will dispel the doubts about his availability for the match against England, but tomorrow Castrogiovanni will rest."
