Pape was joined in the Stade squad by fellow France stars Jules Plisson and Rabah Slimani while Nicolas Mas was in action for their conquerors Montpellier.
In a closely-fought contest it was Montpellier who edged a 19-10 victory as Francois Trinh-Duc pulled the strings at fly-half.
The No.10 has been omitted from Philippe Saint-Andre's side with Plisson preferred but was in impressive form in the victory.
And for Pape, who came off the bench for Stade in the second-half, it was a tough result to swallow before the RBS 6 Nations returns.
"There is no worse scenario, we did not deserve to leave empty-handed," he said.
"It's tough for us because we gave everything.
"It hurts because we deserved to win the game just as much as Montpellier did."
