The 24-year-old started all five of Scotland's RBS 6 Nations matches, helping his side to a third-place finish and he also played a key role in helping Glasgow Warriors to the semi-finals of the PRO12.
As a result, Warren Gatland snapped him up for the Lions squad and Maitland is determined not to let the opportunity pass him by.
He said: "It's awesome. Six months ago, who would have thought I would be in a Lions shirt and surrounded by all these great men?
"It's just crazy how it's all worked out. I've been like a little boy in a candy shop. I can't wait.
"There's five games before the first Test, so everyone's got a chance to show their worth. I just need to be myself, have a good time and try to prove myself and have some fun."
