Burton, Australian born but who qualifies for Italy through his mother, has called time on his career with the Azzurri in order to concentrate on club rugby.
He is set to leave Italian PRO12 outfit Treviso for Newport Gwent Dragons and does so with 21 international appearances for Italy, 13 of which have come in the RBS 6 Nations.
Burton was handed his debut for Italy in 2007 before making his RBS 6 Nations bow in February 2011 and going on to feature in all five of the Azzurri's matches.
He played a part in every one of their 2012 RBS 6 Nations fixtures and made one start and two appearances off the bench during this year's tournament, which saw Italy finish fourth.
And, with international rugby now behind him, Burton believes his stepping aside should allow for others much younger to stake a claim to be his replacement.
"I want to focus more on playing rugby and being with the family. It's a good time for Italy to start blooding some young 10s," said Burton.
"I still feel young so I'm going to play as long as I can. Rugby in the UK is something I've never experienced.
"I think it's a good opportunity to help bring a lot of the young players through at the Dragons. I'm not going there to finish my career; I'm looking to play good rugby."
