Luckily for the 29-year-old - who also missed the 2011 World Cup through injury - the setback wasn't as bad as first feared and he is in the frame to start against the Barbarians in Hong Kong on June 1.
Hibbard's chances of featuring are boosted by the fact he is the only hooker in the squad with England duo Tom Youngs and Dylan Hartley both still on club duty ahead of this weekend's Premiership final.
And while he still faces a race against time to prove his full fitness, Hibbard is enjoying the Lions experience and is determined to grab the chance to nail down a starting berth for the tests with both hands.
"It was definitely a dark moment after I did it," he said, "I thought I was cursed - cursed with injury all the time.
"But I am looking to do full contact by the end of the week, so I'm not far off now. I should be ready for the first game, and if
picked you want to take the opportunity really.
"It's a great experience, meeting boys from other teams, which is really good.
"It's been good. I think we've been gelling quite quick, especially the on the park stuff which is really good."
