And head coach Jacques Brunel admitted afterwards that his medical team would be hard pushed to get him back in time to feature again in this year's Championship.
"It could be a broken rib and if that is the case it would be difficult to have him back during the rest of the tournament," said Brunel.
The news comes as an additional blow for an Azzurri side who came within a whisker of upsetting the odds and defeating England for the first time in their history.
And skipper and man-of-the-match Sergio Parisse could not hide his displeasure after his troops let such a fantastic opportunity slip through their fingers at a snow-covered Stadio Olimpico.
"I'm really disappointed as we could and should have beaten England, also for this marvellous crowd which supported us from the start despite the snow and cold," he said.
"It is a chance lost. They weren't at their best and the precarious conditions could have been to our advantage. It's a shame."
