Bath centre Hape lost the No.12 shirt to clubmate Olly Barkley in the back end of the season but still joins the likes of New Zealand-born Riki Flutey and Hartley in pulling on a Red Rose shirt while fellow Kiwi Dan Ward-Smith and South African Hendre Fourie played in England's 28-28 draw with the Australian Barbarians.
But England manager Martin Johnson is convinced he has the skillset to thrive at international level.
He said: "I have been very impressed with him. He's a very smart carrier with the ball in hand.
"He's one of those guys that seems to have a bit more time than most, he's very composed."
