Alessandro couldn't have wished for a better introduction to the RBS 6 Nations Championship - he was a member of the Italy team that stunned Scotland 34-20 on their tournament debut in 2000. An inspirational hooker, he was installed as captain later that year and went on to lead his country 17 times.
After 45 caps, Alessandro's final appearance for the Azzurri was against England in the 2002 RBS 6 Nations. He also led Treviso to the Italian club title before announcing his retirement in the summer of 2003.
