However, three wins out of three in this season’s competition following hot on the heels of an England victory over New Zealand at Twickenham has catapulted the Red Rose skipper firmly into contention.

The loss of form and injury suffered to Wales skipper Sam Warburton has helped his case, while Jamie Heaslip and Ireland have been off colour during this season’s Championship, winning just one of their three games so far.

Not only has Robshaw helped boss Stuart Lancaster turn England into serious World Cup contenders for the 2015 World Cup, the form of his club-side Harlequins, who he also captains, has also helped his cause.

Quins are currently in the top-four of the Premiership and on course to make the end of season play-offs, while they’ve also qualified for the knockout stages of both the LV= Cup and also the Heineken Cup as top seeds.

And Care believes Robshaw is such an inspirational leader on and off the field that he deserves to be given his chance by Lions boss Warren Gatland on the tour of Australia in the summer.  

“Robbo is one of the most down-to-earth blokes you will meet,” said Care.

“There is nothing flash or arrogant about him. He works as hard as anyone and inspires the rest of the team without needing to make big team talks.

“On and off the pitch he sets the standards and he’s always the last guy out there training.

“He hasn’t changed in the seven years I’ve known him and he has the right balance in his life. Robbo likes a good social event and there can’t be many better players to choose as Lions captain.”
