Johnson’s appointment follows in the wake of Andy Robinson’s resignation has head coach last month and sees him step up from his role as senior assistant coach.

He will be in charge for not only the RBS 6 Nations, which sees Scotland begin their campaign away to Twickenham on February 2, but also the summer tour to South Africa.

Scotland are still seeking a permanent replacement for Robinson and will also appoint an interim forwards coach soon with Johnson determined to do all he can for the nation during his tenure.

“It’s an honour to take charge of the national team for our imminent campaign,” said Johnson. “I will be doing everything I can to bring the best out of our players as we all seek to achieve winning performances.”
