Andy Robinson
Andy Robinson stepped down as Scotland head coach following defeat to Tonga
Blame for Robinson's exit lies solely with players insists former captain Armstrong

Former Scotland captain Gary Armstrong insists the class of 2012 need to take a long, hard look at themselves after Andy Robinson stepped down as head coach.
Following an autumn Test whitewash against New Zealand, South Africa and Tonga, Robinson chose to call time on his career in the Scotland hot seat despite his contract running up until the 2015 World Cup.

This isn’t the first time that Scotland have been whitewashed this year, picking up no points in the 2012 RBS 6 Nations.

But despite Robinson taking the brunt of the criticism and ultimately stepping down following the embarrassment against Tonga, 51-times capped scrum-half Armstrong believes the blame lies firmly with the players.

"I was quite disappointed [with Robinson’s departure]," he said. "Because I thought he was doing quite a good job.

"I think a lot of the players have to have a long, hard look at themselves.

"The coach can only do so much, and when the players cross the whitewash, it's up to them to put whatever gameplan was discussed into fruition.

"When you're watching the games, I question the commitment of some of the players.

"The body language of some of the players makes you wonder if they're there for the money or if they're wanting to pull on the Scottish jersey.

“When we played, we put our body on the line. Some of the attitudes - smiling coming off the pitch - that really riles me.

"It makes you wonder what they're thinking. Does it hurt them? Because it would certainly hurt me.”
