Warburton frustrated by Australia loss

Wales captain Sam Warburton admitted their heart-breaking 14-12 win over Australia was the toughest to take of his career and called on his side to make the next step from turning close losses into wins.

Leigh Halfpenny, who was top points scorer in this season’s RBS 6 Nations, had nudged Wales into a nail-biting 12-9 lead but with just 30 seconds left Australia fly-half Kurtley Beale scored in the right corner.

The defeat made it seven straight Test defeats for Wales – a world away from their triumphant Grand Slam campaign in the RBS 6 Nations – and they dropped out of the top eight of the world rankings.

And with a case of deja vu after their two tight defeats to Australia in the second and third Test matches away Down Under in June captain Warburton was understandably frustrated with another spirited defeat.

“That's the worst defeat I've ever been involved with,” he said.

“We were at home, it's off the back of a bad run really and we did everything we could to win that match

“From a player's point of view it's just so hard because we keep training really hard, do everything we can to try and put things right.

“We can take a lot of positives from the game.

“You know, they [Australia] went down to Twickenham and beat England, which is a very difficult thing to do so they're obviously a quality team, and to nearly win was a great effort, but we have to take that next step and beat these sides.”
