And it appeared to work for the 21-year-old who crossed over for a try and created three more in the 46-24 triumph over the Pumas – increasing his chances of appearing in next year’s RBS 6 Nations.

The flying wing had scored a hat-trick in his first appearance for his country in the 53-0 defeat of Fiji the week previously.

But with World Cup ranking points up for grabs against the South Americans, the Ulster star claims a lot more pressure was on his shoulders.

“This was my first cap and then there was the rankings issue on top of that, so it was a huge game for Ireland,” said Gilroy.

“I was more nervous than I'd ever been but messages of support from family and friends helped me settle.

“I was extremely nervous but the messages I received told me not to put any more pressure on yourself, just be yourself and enjoy it.

“That's what I did and it was those messages from friends and family that settled the nerves.

“I was eager to take my chance because who knows when it will come again.

“Past players said your first cap is special, just enjoy it. They said it just flies by and it does, but there are also moments I won't forget.

“It felt surreal. I couldn't believe I was there. Once you've had a taste of it you want more.

“This is a big confidence boost and, while I can't get ahead of myself, it's good to know I can perform at this level.”
