Blooded by Brunel, Morisi is aiming big

Young Italy centre Luca Morisi has revealed that he is a keen eye with a bow and arrow but admits that on the pitch next season, his sights are set solely on becoming a more frequent fixture in the Treviso starting XV.

Coming through the Italian junior ranks, Morisi was used more as a fly-half but his debut in the Pro12 last season came at centre – a position he feels more comfortable in at senior level.

He went on to appear five more times for the Biancoverde in the league, scoring a try when Treviso came within a whisker of beating the champions-to-be Ospreys in September.

And his performances caught the eye of new Italy head coach Jacques Brunel who handed the then 20-year-old Morisi his international debut against England in the RBS 6 Nations.

Despite not playing again in the tournament, there was no backtracking from Brunel who handed him a second cap on this summer’s tour of the Americas.

Budging club teammate Tommaso Benvenuti onto the wing, Morisi started at centre against the USA in Houston as he experienced his first win in Azzurri colours.

An achievement he celebrated by buying a bow, doubling Treviso’s archers to two along with lock Marco Fuser.

“Recently I bought a bow and I would like to use it more often,” said Morisi. “Because I like using it outside in the country.

“But this season I’m aiming to earn a starting jersey on more occasions, but I don’t mind where.

“But if I must choose I prefer centre. It’s the role that I’ve always played in, only in the national juniors was I used as a fly-half.

“The team (Treviso) is very good and last season I enjoyed myself. I always saw a cohesive group and if we manage to stay tight we’ll manage to realise out potential and be satisfied.

“We’re also hoping not fritter away too many chances next season, like we did in the last one – I still have that Connacht game in my mind (Connacht won 11-9).”
