The wide game is to become Italy's style - Brunel

Italy coach Jacques Brunel put the Azzurri's 13-6 win against Scotland down to the traditional Gallic qualities of playing with the ball in hand.
Italy scored the only try in a 13-6 win at the Stadio Olimpico, condemning Scotland to their first RBS 6 Nations Wooden Spoon since 2007.

Italy wing Giovanbattista Venditti was the man to cross the white wash with the remainder of Italy’s points coming from the boots of fly-half Kristopher Burton and wing Mirco Bergamasco.

The win was the perfect way for Frenchman Brunel to end his first Championship at Italy’s helm and he promises more wins will come if his team trust their instincts.

“There was only one way to get out of the crossroads we were at and start winning: leave the tight spaces alone and start playing with ball in hand out wide,” he said.

“There is space to grow and there is a good base for the future.

“We’ll keep growing if we continue to work like this.”

Captain and No. 8 Sergio Parisse echoed his coach’s sentiments and said that on the day rugby justice was served.

“We wanted to win, we had to win and we had a monstrous amount of possession so it was right we did,” said Parisse.

“This is a great sign, we hope to continue along this road.”
