Mitchell has represented Wales through the junior ranks, captaining the Under-19s, and made his senior debut in 2009 as a replacement against the US on the tour to North America.
Earlier this year he made a try-scoring appearance against Ireland in the RBS 6 Nations – one of three games in the 2013 tournament – but couldn’t prevent Wales falling to a 22-30 defeat.
Mitchell has yet to play for Exeter this season after suffering the pectoral injury after coming on a substitute against Wasps on Sandy Park a week ago.
It’s not the first time the Welsh international has suffered a shoulder problem – in March 2011 he dislocated a shoulder in the 19-13, Six Nations win over Ireland that kept him out for the rest of the season. And he missed last season’s autumn internationals after rupturing a bicep playing for the Chiefs against London Welsh.
“Mitch is looking a pretty long-term injury,” Exeter head coach Rob Baxter said. “We haven’t finalised the exact issue with Craig yet.
“But he is likely to require an operation on his shoulder area – an injury similar to the one playing for us up at London Welsh last year.
“His absence is likely to be quite lengthy.”
