Lancaster is likely to be forced into changes for the summer tour of Argentina with a number of his regulars set to be on British & Irish Lions duty.
And, although he welcomes competition within his side, Lancaster believes the majority of his World Cup squad in two years time will be made up of those from the 2013 RBS 6 Nations.
"The squad for the World Cup is unlikely to be materially different from the current one," he said. "New players will have to meet criteria: internal competition is currently high, but it is vital to ensure complacency does not creep in.
