Bennett: Disappointment drove Scotland Under-20s on

Centre Mark Bennett claims Scotland Under-20s used the disappointment of defeat to England to down Italy at the weekend and get their RBS 6 Nations campaign off and running.
Scotland fell to an opening weekend 15-6 loss at the hands of England but recovered well in Galashiels to get back to winning ways against the Italians – triumphing 30-17.

Tries from fly-half Tommy Allan, captain Jonny Gray and wing Damian Hoyland secured the victory, but the performance of Glasgow Warriors’ on-loan star Bennett was the highlight and he claimed the man of the match award.

The 20-year-old, who left the Warriors in 2011 to join Top 14 side Clermont Auvergne only to return on loan, admits they preyed on their opponents’ weaker fitness and it paid off.

“We’d been working hard all week and it was disappointing to lose last week against England, so we’ve just been building from there and it showed [against Italy],” he said.

“We thought that we were fitter than them from the start and we tried to use that to our advantage, we tried to lift the tempo as quickly as we could and it worked.”
