Twelvetrees crashed his way over for a try in his first England appearance to go with scores from Chris Ashton, Geoff Parling and Danny Care, while Owen Farrell was in red-hot form with the boot in a 38-18 victory.

Sean Maitland also scored on debut for Scotland while Stuart Hogg notched arguably the best try of the game late on but England were well worthy of their victory.

Twelvetrees, 24, was handed his debut at inside centre with Manu Tuilagi out with an ankle injury as Brad Barritt moved to outside centre.

Tuilagi could well return to fitness ahead of England’s crunch clash with Ireland in Dublin next Sunday but Twelvetrees laid down a sizeable marker on debut.

And Lancaster admits he has plenty tough calls to make.

“We’ve got lots of decisions to make, some of the guys coming off the bench were excellent, but in terms of a first cap for Billy, I’m really chuffed for him,” he said.

“It’s great when you can get a player on and he makes his debut at Twickenham and in the Calcutta Cup and you get a win like that, it is fantastic.

“I had a chat with him after the game and asked him if he enjoyed it and he said it was absolutely brilliant.

“And that’s what we want, young players who are excited about playing for England.”

Traditionally, Calcutta Cup matches can be cagey, close fought affairs but both teams showed their attacking intent from the off – and Lancaster revealed that was what pleased him most.

“I’m really pleased with the scoreline, we definitely would have taken that at the start of the day,” he added.

“Our intent to play was excellent, a little bit loose on occasions, but overall we’re really pleased with the start.

“I think we’ve been building steadily and getting more consistent over the last 12 months.

“We’ve got a massive challenge next Sunday in Dublin and that’s what everything points to.

“It was a great day to play, a nice still day, and we knew that if we kept playing and took the game to Scotland, they would tire in last 20.

“Fair play to Scotland, their work-rate and commitment was outstanding.

“We watched half of the [Ireland] game and Ireland played very well in the first half and Wales came back strongly in the second half so it’s going to be a very good game next week.”
