The 29-year-old featured as Ulster were beaten in their European Cup quarter final with Saracens earlier this month but responded well.
He ran in a hat-trick as the Irish side beat Connacht 58-12 on Friday and, with title rivals Leinster and Munster both losing this weekend, the top of the table has tightened up.
"After the disappointment of last weekend's Euro exit, we were still licking out wounds and we wanted to make sure we came out and played with physicality and accuracy," Trimble told the Belfast Newsletter.
"That was a pretty mature performance from us. We worked hard and got the job done and everyone is pretty happy.
"I am delighted to get my first ever hat-trick. It was one of those nights when there were plenty of tries about and I was in the right place at the right time.
"We are in the hunt now and second or first seed is not out of the question, although there is still a lot of hard work to do."
