Brown comes out on top in battle with Foden

Mike Brown was the outstanding figure for Harlequins in his England full-back battle with Northampton Saints' Ben Foden in the Aviva Premiership but he claimed he was purely focused on the job.
The 27-year-old made his return for England after over three years in the 2012 RBS 6 Nations and performed admirably in an unfamiliar wing role during the autumn internationals.

Brown was excellent under the high ball in tricky conditions as Nick Evans kicked all of the points in an 18-9 win while lock Courtney Lawes made his return.

But despite battling for a starting berth in the next RBS 6 Nations along with Alex Goode and Foden, he insisted it wasn’t on his mind.

“Not at all, I just focus on each game as it comes and make sure I am doing my job,” he said.

“I am paid to catch high balls and put the lads in strong positions so that is all I focused on.

“It wasn’t the best conditions so you had to get your basics right to come and get the win.”

Another man in England contention, Freddie Burns, kicked all of Gloucester ’s points including a 73rd-minute winner in their 18-16 victory over Exeter Chiefs.

Burns will have strong competition from Toby Flood for the No.10 shirt and the 27-year-old kicked 11 points as Leicester Tigers downed London Irish 31-9 away from home.

Former England fly-half Charlie Hodgson produced a masterclass of controlling the game in wet conditions as well as scoring 17 points as Saracens took down Bath 22-0.

And in Friday night’s game, Worcester Warriors recorded a vital win against London Welsh in a basement battle as Semisi Taulava scored the only try in a 13-6 victory.
