Sean Lineen has been backed to take over as Scotland head coach ahead of the RBS 6 Nations by former stand-off Craig Chalmers following Andy Robinson's resignation.
New Zealand-born Lineen played alongside Chalmers in Scotland’s Five Nations Grand Slam triumph in 1990.

Lineen was in charge of Glasgow Warriors for six years was backs coach for the national side under Frank Hadden in the summer of 2005.

He is currently in charge of Scotland Under-20s, and Melrose coach Chalmers wants to see him make the step up.

“Sean has shown his loyalty to Scotland since moving over. He would be top of my list,” said Chalmers.

“Sean knows the game and he’s been totally committed to Scotland.”

Robinson enjoyed a successful summer tour with wins over Australia, Fiji and Samoa but suffered an autumn Test series whitewash.

The loss to Tonga at Pittodrie proved to be the final straw for Robinson following defeats at Murrayfield to New Zealand and South Africa.

Ahead of the 2015 World Cup draw on December 3, Scotland have slipped to 12th in the world rankings and failed to make it out of the group stage for the first time in last year’s competition in New Zealand.
