His outstanding form for relegation-threatened Leeds in recent weeks has seen the South African, who played for the Vodacom Cheetahs, call up to Johnson’s latest EPS gathering.
Fourie’s power in the back-row could yet be an a huge asset to England with Johnson still desperately searching for the right formula in the pack ahead of the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.
And Fourie, who was born and raised in Burgersdorp, admits he would have no problem pulling on a Red Rose shirt against the Springboks.
“I’ve not spoken to Martin Johnson but I’ve spoken with Stuart (Lancaster) a lot and it’s nice to know I’m in their thoughts,” added Fourie.
“The World Cup is something I’m definitely looking at. I’m 30 now so I might not get any other chances and I believe I’m approaching the peak of my powers.
“My accent might not sound English but I believe I’m English and I count going back to South Africa now as going on holiday.
“Friends and family have asked me how I would feel about facing the Springboks as an England player but I would relish taking them on head on.”
And Leeds director of rugby Andy Key is in no doubt Fourie’s power could be a massive weapon to England.
“Hendre has been outstanding for us – he’s performing to the potential he has always had and it has helped him that he’s been injury free,” said Key.
“I would have no reservation in putting him in the full team. The style of player that he is and the destructive way that he plays is perhaps what England need at the moment.”
