No Italian job for Lamont

Full-back Rory Lamont has been ruled out of Scotland's final RBS 6 Nations clash against Italy after breaking a bone in his face in the victory over England.
The 25-year-old was carried off in the first half of the 15-9 Calcutta Cup triumph at Murrayfield.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for tests, which revealed a fracture that is expected to require surgery.

That will rule him out of Saturday’s encounter in Rome’s Stadio Flaminio, which hooker Ross Ford is also likely to miss.

Scotland team doctor James Robson said: “Rory has made good progress from his concussion, however, scans have revealed he does have a facial fracture, which will require further expert opinion and probable surgery.”

Robson said the injury appears similar to one that Chris Paterson suffered against Samoa four years ago - a triple fracture of the cheekbone that ruled him out of Scotland’s Australasian tour.

Lamont will undergo further assessment on Monday along with Ford.

Dr Robson added: “Ross sustained damage to his right ankle ligaments during the first half.

“He will require further assessment tomorrow but, at this stage, he is unlikely to be available for selection for this week.”

A number of other players suffered the “usual bumps and bruises from a full-on Test match”.

Nikki Walker (ankle), Hugo Southwell (jaw) and Paterson (arm) will be assessed on Monday but they are not expected to be at risk of missing the Italian trip.
