Head coach Warren Gatland described Warburton’s performance as ‘brilliant’, citing his departure as a key reason for the defeat but he will now have to reshuffle his back row with Ireland’s Sean O’Brien and Wales’ Justin Tipuric the leading candidates for the vacant No.7 jersey.
“It is incredibly disappointing to be ruled out of the tour through injury as we head to Sydney for the deciding match,” said Warburton, who missed the first two games of the tour with a knee problem.
“I wish the team all the best and hope I can play some part in the build up this week. I am confident that the boys can finish the job off and secure the series win.”
With Paul O’Connell, captain of the 2009 tour, ruled out of the series after fracturing his arm in the first Test, Warburton’s absence depletes the Lions’ leadership ranks further.
Dan Lydiate was captain of the midweek side last Tuesday but Brian O’Driscoll, who has led the side seven times but just once in a Test in 2005, is the favourite without O’Connell or Warburton.
