Brunel believes Italy have taken great strides

Italy coach Jacques Brunel believes his side's historic win over Ireland in their final RBS 6 Nations match of the current Championship highlights the great strides being made by the country.
Ireland had never lost to Italy in the RBS 6 Nations prior to Saturday’s 22-15 defeat in Rome, but were outfought and outthought at the Stadio Olimpico, becoming the Azzurri’s second home scalp of the Championship, having previously beaten France.

Victory over Ireland, which came courtesy of a try from wing Giovanbattista Venditti as well as 14 points from the boot of Luciano Orquera and three from Gonzalo Garcia, means Italy end the RBS 6 Nations in fourth place, having achieved two victories for the first time since 2007.

And while challenging for the title may still be some way off, Brunel insists victory over Ireland highlights the continued progress of Italian rugby.

“With this victory we showed we were capable of producing some continuity,” Brunel said.

“We've shown a good level to our game in this Six Nations. We are a work in progress, but we have shown character and spirit.

“At times there was a lot of composure to our game and that shows we are on the right track.”
