However Manu Tuilagi’s try appeared to swing the tide, and Machenaud, who was one of the players to come on at Twickenham, is aware that the replacements did not have the desired impact.

As a result of a third loss Philippe Saint-André made two changes to his squad, Maxime Médard and Sébastien Vahaamahina coming into the 23, and Machenaud admits he is grateful to have been given another chance.

He said: “Coming on as a replacement can be difficult. Between the pressure and the desire to do well, it can take two or three minutes to adjust where you aren’t as composed.

“In England the bench should have freshened things up but it didn’t. Maybe the fact that they weren’t in the same rhythm played a part.

“For me, we were trailing 17-13 when I came on. I played 13 minutes, it’s not easy.

“I play in a position where it’s difficult to learn the entire game plan in a week. But after three defeats anything could have happened. It’s happened to others [to be dropped] and it could have happened to me. I’ve been given another chance and I’m delighted about it. I’m very determined.

“We will play in Ireland, in a full stadium. The desire is there. For the rest, I’m not thinking about it. I look at the present, not the past.

“We’ve lost three close games, three games we could have won. We have to turn the disappointment into motivation. And maybe some anger.”
