Maitland determined to succeed on Murrayfield debut

Sean Maitland is determined to make it an occasion to savour on a personal and team note as Scotland bid to bounce back from defeat to England in their next RBS 6 Nations clash at Murrayfield.
The 24-year-old wing got his international career and Scotland’s RBS 6 Nations campaign off to the perfect start in the Calcutta Cup clash against England at Twickenham, scoring a try after ten minutes.

However Scotland, aside from two Greig Laidlaw penalties, didn’t score another try until the final ten minutes as Chris Ashton, Billy Twelvetrees – also on debut – and Geoff Parling all touched down beforehand for England.

Full-back Stuart Hogg grabbed Scotland’s second try before Danny Care added a fourth for England with Owen Farrell converting three of the tries and four penalties in the 38-18 win at Twickenham.

Scotland now face Italy, who defeated France 23-18 in Rome, in the first of three successive games at Murrayfield – and Maitland wants to get Scotland back on track and make it a home debut to remember.

“I scored my first try in my first Test. I was happy with the first ten minutes but the next 60 minutes I wasn’t too happy,” said New Zealand-born Maitland.

“There’s a few things we need to work on. The tackle area and getting our backs involved. We [the backs] were a bit of a myth out there.

“We were more frustrated, all three of us. There’s a lot of talent to be shown in our backline. It’s just one of those things.

“Things have gone really fast for me. I’ve only been here for a couple of months. To be playing Test rugby for Scotland is a dream come true.

“It’s just the start, hopefully, for me. Going back home to Murrayfield is going to be special. Hopefully I get to play and experience Murrayfield for the first time.

“I’ve still got a lot to prove to the people of Scotland, getting selected having not been in the country for long.”
