But shoulder reconstruction in the summer of 2010 led to a loss of form a year later and Beattie, then at Glasgow Warriors, played only a minor role in the 2011 RBS 6 Nations.
He was subsequently left out of Andy Robinson’s 2011 World Cup squad, winning the last of 16 caps just before the Scots flew to New Zealand, but a move to Montpellier has breathed new life into his career.
This term he has been in outstanding form for the French side and interim boss Johnson admits Beattie could add something to his side, having named his starting XV for the Twickenham clash.
“I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen of Johnnie Beattie,” said Johnson.
“He brings dynamism to our back-row and we’re looking for him to bring that to bear on Saturday.”
Meanwhile, having named Brown as his skipper on Monday, Johnson revealed two vice-captains in the shape of Greig Laidlaw, who starts an international at scrum-half for the first time, and prop Ryan Grant.
Johnson added: “I’ve named Greig and Ryan as vice-captains because they’re both quality rugby players and the sort of blokes that I reckon can add to the leadership mix.”
