Williams calls on Wales to build on home opener

Rhodri Williams insists Wales Under-20s need to capitalise on home advantage in their opening RBS 6 Nations encounter with Ireland to pick up from where they left off in 2012.
The Red Dragons are coming into the competition on a high, after following up last year’s fourth-place finish at the RBS 6 Nations with a best-ever third at the IRB Junior World Championship in South Africa.

They kick off this season on February 6 in Colwyn Bay against Ireland – who beat them in the opener of the 2012 competition 11-6 in Athlone.

Though they lost both games on the road in last year’s RBS 6 Nations they fared better at home - beating Scotland and Italy before losing 36-16 to eventual runners-up France.

And, with three away fixtures and a home tie against reigning champions England this time around, Llandovery and Scarlets scrum-half Williams is convinced Wales need to hit the ground running against Ireland.

“We’re really looking forward to the Ireland game at home. We have great, record-breaking support in Colwyn Bay and want to turn Eirias into a real fortress,” he said.

“We have had some good performances up there and put that down to the crowd giving us an extra 10 per cent.

“Ireland are a good side. We lost last year to them but we have to keep our home record.

“We have to back up what the boys achieved in South Africa. We will put our best efforts into the Six Nations while building into the next World Cup.

“This is key to our development and we need to put in a good performance.

“We have a good squad with a lot of leaders. Our skill levels are up there with the best and we have a good chance in the Championship.

“Our back-line is the best at our age-level. Our skill levels are high enough and if we can get a good platform up front I don’t see why we can’t mix it with anyone in the world.”
