Wales' Taylor out to exact revenge on Ireland in curtain raiser

Wales women's captain Rachel Taylor believes a perfect blend of old and new blood, alongside the memory of a crushing defeat, will help her side get their RBS 6 Nations campaign underway with victory against Ireland.
With an ever-improving regional programme ensuring more and more young women take their first steps on the pathway to national selection, Taylor has been impressed in what has been an encouraging pre-season.

And with the emergence of uncapped wings Rafiuke Taylor and Leila Johns, supported by the return of Gemma Hallett and Catrin Edwards, the back-rower is confident of achieving a top-four finish to guarantee selection for next year’s World Cup.

But with Ireland first up at the Port Talbot Athletic Ground on Sunday, Taylor admits the bitter taste left from a 36-0 defeat in last year’s competition is a big enough incentive to start the 2013 campaign by exacting revenge and gaining some momentum.

“We’ve been together quite a while now and pre-season has gone really well. This is probably the best blend of youth and experience that we’ve ever had to be honest,” said Taylor.

“We’re got some young players coming through the regional ranks and we’re quite fortunate that we’ve got some senior players, who have been away for a while, coming back.

“I think having Catrin Edwards back will be a big boost and obviously you’ve got the likes of Gemma Hallett coming back - her experience will be invaluable.

“And then we’ve got a couple of flyers to look out for – Vicky Taylor is someone who has come from the regional programme and she’s absolutely rapid.

“Wales and Ireland have been closely matched over the years. Last year they got one over on us but that’s one that has stuck in our mind and one that we’re targeting this season.

“It’s the first game and we’re all raring to go and that’s what we’re aiming for. After that we’ve got three games on the road so it’s important that we get a good start.”
