Cipriani dances to Flutey's tune

Danny Cipriani is backing Riki Flutey to ignite England's attack and is eager to be united with his Wasps colleague at Test level.
Former New Zealand Maori centre Flutey qualifies for England on residency grounds in September and has been included in Martin Johnson’s first elite player squad.

A pedestrian midfield is one of the departments that requires urgent attention and Cipriani believes Flutey is the ideal solution.

“Riki has brought dynamism and passion to Wasps. He’s a phenomenal player and has had an amazing season,” said the fly-half.

“If he can replicate what he does for Wasps at international level, he will be a massive asset to England.

“I’d love to team up with him in the England midfield. There are a few guys in the squad who can play 12 but Riki has had such a good year.

“He would fit into the system perfectly and he’s the sort of player who will help England improve.”

Cipriani missed the recent tour to New Zealand to continue his rehabilitation from ankle surgery.

Two hidings by the All Blacks and controversy off the pitch suggest he was better off staying at home, despite the painful circumstances.

But one positive to emerge from the fortnight was the outstanding back-row combination of Tom Rees, James Haskell and Luke Narraway.

Rees and Haskell are also club colleagues of Cipriani’s and the 20-year-old was delighted with the Test rookies’ progress.

“Tom was phenomenal. I thought he had an outstanding tour. He played really well. James was all over the park as well,” he said.

“It is very difficult to dominate the All Blacks physically but I felt James managed that. The way those two are going is a real plus for England’s future.

“There’s a bit of banter between the three of us at Wasps but we all support each other. We do extra training.

“It’s James and Tom who also tend to be the last people on the training pitch.”
