O'Connell under injury cloud

Ireland lock Paul O'Connell is struggling to recover from a back injury and is unlikely to be fit for the opening games of the RBS 6 Nations Championship.

The Munster player has a prolapsed disc, which has troubled him since the World Cup, and may be forced to undergo surgery.

O'Connell made a comeback for his club but the problem flared up again in training and surgery could be required.

Ireland face Italy in their RBS 6 Nations opener at Croke Park on February 2.
