Leinster back row forward Shane Jennings will miss Ireland's World Cup warm-up match against Scotland on August 11 after undergoing surgery on his right thumb.
Jennings was ruled out of full training for five to six weeks with a small fracture in his thumb which he picked up in the second test against Argentina during Irelands summer tour.
An x-ray and MRI scan of the thumb on his return to Dublin revealed a small amount of bony bruising with no break but, when he returned to pre-season, training the injury flared up again.
A repeat scan revealed a small fracture which required surgery to fix the fragment of bone. Jennings thumb is now in a cast for the duration of his recovery, ruling him out of Irelands pre-season camp in Spala, Poland.
